An MOB Holiday- Bag in a Box

Friends,

As part four in our series of neat holiday gifts, we have Timbuk2’s “Bag in a Box.” This idea is great because it offers a way to create a custom colored messenger-style bag. The recipient of this gift will visit Timbuk2’s website, pick any style messenger bag, and then design the color scheme any way they see fit! These bags are functional, very cool, and definitely a safe bet for the hard-to-shop-for crowd.

The MOB Saturday Road Ride will leave from the shop tomorrow at 11 am as usual. This ride generally last two and a half to three hours, and is at about a 17-19 mph pace. This is great winter time training, and the weather should be really nice tomorrow, especially for this time of year. We will ride north of Winston-Salem, thru Germanton, and back home through the King area. See you then!

Looking ahead to Christmas Eve, Charles will be leading another one of his quickly approaching legendary status mountain bike rides out to Salem Lake. (Check out the pics from the Thanksgiving Tofurkey Ride) The “Happy Festivus Ride” will commence at 10 am on Sunday, December 24. The ride will meet at the shop. Round trip the ride will take between three and four hours. Come celebrate the season with a mountain bike ride on Christmas Eve!

Thanks and we’ll see you soon!

An MOB Holiday- Coffee Edition

Friends,

Is there a better way to begin your holiday morning bike rides than with a nice cup of coffee? Certainly not. In fact, some people will not even get on the bike without at least one cup of java. Well, now at MOB, you can pick up your custom blended MOJoe coffee! Available in a light roast (Mello-Velo) and a darker roast version (Manic Mechanic-for Charles), you will be ready to hit the road or trail after a cup of either. Of course, this is a great holiday gift idea for any coffee drinker on your list.

Thanks!

Mock Orange Jerseys

Friends,

The long awaited Mock Orange Bikes Shop Jerseys are nearly a reality! There will be two versions, a sweet orange and blue version, included here, and a “classic” version that is pink and brown and sans various manufacturer logos found on the orange and blue version. We are doing a fairly limited run of the jerseys this time around, so if you are sure that you would like to have one, a deposit of $25 per jersey by December 9th will insure that you receive your specified quantity. The jerseys should be in the shop by early February.

Thanks!

Riding for Fun

We received this article, originally appearing on www.bicycling.com, from a fellow MOBer. (Thanks Ken!) Thought we would post it here.

Bicycling's Editor-In-Chief looks past the disappointment of the Floyd Landis affair to check in with the real home of cycling: THE EVERYDAY RIDER

By Steve Madden

Tulloch called Friday night to ask about a ride on Saturday. It would have to be in the morning, he said, because Isabel had activities in the afternoon, and he would have to drive her. And he and Kim had a date planned that night. So, yeah, 9:30 a.m., at my house.

He showed up five minutes early, like he always does, do-rag in place. Said he didn't want an espresso, just wanted to ride, and that he had time for a couple of hours at the most, but he had done 50 miles yesterday so he was a little creaky.

We rode the flats to loosen up. It was my first time on a bike in a week, and it was good to feel the knots leaving my body. We saw the guys from Bikeland II heading home after their ride, and a team from Liberty Cycles hammering along.

Tulloch and I hadn't seen each other in a couple of weeks, so we caught up as we rolled through the Swamp, a route so familiar we didn't have to offer each other hand signals. I said the scar on his wrist was healing nicely; he said the wrist still hurt a little after surgery, but what really hurt was the almost two months of warm-weather cycling he'd missed because of his wipeout.

He told me about a minor car accident he'd been in, and how he blamed it on a lack of sleep caused by staying up late to watch the Tour de France on OLN. He said he was thinking about buying a new bike. I told him I liked the new SRAM road group I was testing. I beat him up the hill on Skyline Drive; he said he didn't know we were racing. The climb up Hardscrabble was as hard as it always is, and he waited for me. Tulloch asked if I was still jet-lagged. I said I was.

He said he couldn't make Sunday's group ride because he and Kim were taking Isabel and a friend to the beach, but that he would be around all week if I wanted to ride; that it was supposed to be crazy-hot but he'd probably go out anyway, after he did some chores around the house. He asked if we were still going to do that ride in Princeton and if we could drive down together, gas being so expensive. Then we said, "Thanks for the ride," and headed our own ways.

Like most of you, I spent much of my summer apologizing for cycling, answering questions posed by family, friends and colleagues about protocols and B samples and Operation Puerto and the efficacy of Jack Daniels as race preparation. One guy told me cycling was about to become as irrelevant as the once-mighty sport of boxing now is.

It was tough to argue with him. When you don't know who or what to believe, it's hard to mount a cogent defense even of something you love.

Except for this: The soul of cycling doesn't reside in the pro peloton. Rather, it is in the 8 million Americans who ride at least twice a week. They don't get paid, but their rewards are many. You know. You're one of them. So are the people on your weekend ride, and the newbies training on the local rec trail for a charity ride. And guys like Tulloch. We all keep it alive, for all the right reasons.

Saturday, September 15

Hello MOBers! We hope you are all doing well and enjoying this refreshing cool spell we have going this week. The crew at Mock Orange is certainly psyched for the pending autumn season.

This Saturday, September 15, we are doing a long road ride from the shop at 8 am. The route will take us through Germanton via Baux Mtn. Road, to Friendship Rd., on over to Flat Shoals Rd, to the top of Sauratown Mtn., and back to the shop via King, NC. This is a great local ride and this Saturday morning the weather should be awesome. We will stop at a store after the climb on the way back to town. This is a four hour plus ride from the shop, so be prepared for some quality time in the saddle this Saturday!

Looking a little further ahead, Saturday, October 7 is the annual “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day.” This is a great function that takes place on the first Saturday in October to honor our young friend and ambassador of the sport of mountain biking, Jack Doub. Jack passed away suddenly in October of 2002. This IMBA sanctioned event is a great opportunity to grab a kid and hit the trail! There are many great areas in our city to ride mountain bikes, so remember October 7 is the official “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day.” The official location of this year’s event is not yet determined, but we will keep you posted.

Also on the horizon: Mocktoberfest. Stay tuned for more details…

Thanks so much!

Back to School Baby!

Well, even though school is starting, spirits are at an all time high at MOB. That’s right, no sign of the back-to-school blues here. There are just too many exciting things going on to be bothered with furthering one’s education. We have bikes to ride. Get on your bikes!

Speaking of going back to school, though, no self-respecting high schooler should be without a brand new Mock Orange Bikes t-shirt. Coming in several very stylish color combinations, the newest edition of MOB T’s are here! Let all your classmates know where your heart truly lies as you begin your year long wrestling match with honors biology. You would rather be on the porch at MOB, hanging out after a satisfying bike ride, of course! As you enter the shop to pick up your new T and are trying to figure out which hot new version to go with, Charles will gladly model each color for you to help with your decision.

Continuing with great new stuff, the long awaited Mock Orange Bikes water bottles are in stock! Choose from two different sizes and color schemes. That cool, clean water just seems to taste better coming out of that fresh new MOB water bottle.

We are looking forward to this Saturday’s Town and Country road ride. We will meet at the shop at 9 am as usual and ride at a casual pace for about three hours. The weather should be good, the company will be great, so come and get the weekend rolling on the right foot (er, wheel?) The ride will head north of town through Germanton and return to the shop via Rural Hall. We’ll see you then!

Looking a little further ahead, the fifth annual Fourth Street Criterium will be held the evening of Friday, September 8. This is the kick-off event for a great weekend of racing, ending with the Carolina Cup in Greensboro on September 10th. The Fourth Street course is in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem and is lots of fun. Racing starts at 6:15 and concludes with the pro/am race at 8:45. Visit www.4thstreetcrit.com for more information.

Summertime and the Livin' is Easy

Hello Friends! We certainly hope you all are having a wonderful summer season. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Hanes Park Criterium. We had a great time hanging on the course. It was a great event for both participants and spectators. Thanks to Cyclesafe.org for promoting the race and we are looking forward to next year!

Speaking of cool events, the inaugural Tour de Tuck is taking place this weekend in scenic Jackson County, North Carolina. This promises to be an awesome ride through the beautiful mountains. Beginning in Sylva, NC and heading over to Cherokee to the mouth of the Blue Ridge Parkway, over to the Cashiers area and back through the metropolis of Cullowhee, NC, this promises to be a stellar training ride. There is a 60 mile option as well as a 102 mile version. For more info visit www.tourdetuck.com.

Remember, today is Tuesday, so there must be a ride leaving from the shop this evening! Meet at the shop at six for a twenty mile in-town cruise before re-grouping at the shop. Those who are into a little interval action will then move into “Seven Summits” mode and attempt to conquer the climbs surrounding the shop. Look forward to seeing you!

Hanes Park Criterium

Greetings friends! Here in the hot days of summer it sure is fun to hang out with some cool people! We had a blast this past Tuesday night at the first annual MOB “Rider Appreciation Night!” Thanks to everyone who came over to do the ride and enjoy the company and refreshments. We here at the MOB sure had a great time and are now only looking forward to the next opportunity to “kick it” on the porch with our friends.

For those interested in the Saturday morning ride, we will meet at the shop at 9 am. This week we will roll out thru Tobaccoville, back to the shop via Lewisville. This will make for a lovely three hour “Town and Country” loop to kick off the weekend. The pace on this ride is a casual 17-20 mph, so it is a very enjoyable affair for riders of all skill and ability levels. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

As to the next opportunity to “chill on the porch,” the Hanes Park Criterium returns to Winston-Salem this Sunday, August 6th. Amateur races begin at 8:45, with the pros taking the course at 3:00. This is a grand old course located right here in the Historic West End. Since the shop is located right on the course, what better place to stop and take in the action then the MOB veranda? The “crew” will be using the porch as its base of operations on race day. Please feel free to swing by and hang out! Also of note on this day is the Baux Mtn. Rd Fun Ride. Led by our friend local legend Jim Conrad and a several pro bike riders, the ride will leave the race venue, specifically the Reynolds Auditorium parking lot off of Hawthorne Road, at 10 am. This will be a great way to grab a little fresh air and get back to the venue in time for the two main events, the pro race and the kid’s race. The kid’s races will begin at 4:40. This is always one of the most exciting events for participants and spectators alike. For more information on the day’s festivities please visit www.nccycling.com or www.cyclesafe.org. We look forward to seeing you all this coming Sunday for the Hanes Park Criterium!

Rider Appreciation Night, Oh Yeah!

Okay friends, definitely plan to join us on Tuesday, August 1, for the first annual MOB “Rider Appreciation Night.” We will meet at the normal time of 6, do a loop around town, and upon our return to the shop we will head to the famous MOB porch for refreshments. This will be the first “official” use of the veranda here at MOB, and we are so looking forward to it! Come on down next Tuesday and enjoy the ride as well as some quality off-the-bike time with the “crew.” A rockin’ time will be had by all!

Between now and then, don’t forget the Saturday morning road ride. We leave the shop every Saturday at 9 am for a three hour cruise. This week we will ride to Lewisville, heading out Shallowford Road and coming back in via Old Stage Road. This is a fairly popular route in the area and is always nice this time of year. We will leave from the shop at 9 and plan to be back around 12.

Looking ahead to August 6th, The Hanes Park Criterium returns. Come on down to this killer Winston-Salem event to take part in the action or simply to spectate. This year this event is the final day in the Crossroads Cycling Classic, a four day crit series around the region. The course down here is just over a mile long and is wide, safe, and fast. This is a great race for new riders and experienced ones as well. Come by the shop on the 6th of August, we will be swingin’ that day for sure! Stay tuned for more details…

Another American in Paris?

I trust you all have been enjoying the big bike race in France this year. We here at MOB certainly have. It was totally awesome yesterday to see that “other” American slide into the Yellow Jersey. Good work Floyd Landis! Of course, it is nice to see all those American guys do well in the big races. Even in the “post Lance era” you’ve got guys like Levi Leiphiemer, Dave Zabriskie, and George Hincapie to keep the patriotic flames afire. Hopefully one or more of those riders can win a stage or two this year before the “big show” draws to a close. In the meantime, it will be good to see a long and prosperous reign in Yellow for Floyd Landis this year.

If you have not been by the shop lately, come on by and check out the latest in stylish off the bike headwear from MOB. The new “mobilt” MOB baseball hats are here and boy they are snazzy! Also, unbeknownst to many folks, Chris King, famous for bomb proof headsets for bicycles, also roasts a mean coffee bean. Come by and sample a cup of the “Rocket Brew.” You may want to grab a bag for a little “rocket” power!
