SECCA CX!
Cyclocross season is just around the corner and this year we have some great pre-season training opportunities that we are super excited about. Every Tuesday evening in September there will be cross practice races at SECCA here in Winston-Salem, beginning on Tuesday September 1. The evenings will consist of two practice races; the 30 minute "B" race will begin at 6:10 pm and the 50 minute "A" race will begin at 6:45. There is no entry fee and there is no prize list. These races are purely for practice purposes. This series will be an awesome way to go ahead and get the cross season going! SECCA is located at 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. We also owe SECCA a special word of thanks for letting us have these races on their property. Grab some knobby tires and come on out to SECCA Tuesdays in September! For more information about these practice races and all other things related to Mock Orange cyclocross, visit our new cyclocross website: www.mockorangecross.com.

Hanes Park Classic

Hanes Park Classic this Sunday!
Hello Friends,
This week's Mock Orange Road Ride is a classic. The 38 mile Lewisville Mill Loop is an old stand-by that is always a pleasure to ride. The group will depart from the shop at its normal time of 9 am on Saturday morning.
This Sunday, August 9 is going to be a great day here at Mock Orange!
This is the day of the annual Hanes Park Classic here in the West End, and coincidentally, Mock Orange is located right on the course! There will be amateur and professional bicycle racing around Hanes Park for the better part of the day. Be sure to come by and take in some great racing from the shop. We will be open as long as there is bike racing out there!
As an added bonus, the Look sponsored TIBCO Women's Professional Cycling Team in the shop at 3 pm for a meet and greet/autograph session.
There will not be a ride with the team as previously reported due to logistical problems, but the Official Mock Orange Post-Race Party will transpire on the porch here at the shop beginning at 7 pm. Food and beverages will be provided for as long as they last. Please come and join in the fun on Sunday August 9!
Thanks!

Ibis, MTB trail advocacy, and the Mojo
Info about a good cause:
Here in Northern California, Spring has muscled winter aside which has in turn been temporarily displaced by summer with temps in the mid 90's. The furnaces in our houses have been put back into hibernation and we're enjoying monster traction on our local trails. "Ego Dirt" we call it, because just about anyone can pilot a bike around corners like Brian Lopes in these conditions.

The furnaces in our houses have been put back into hibernation and we're enjoying monster traction on our local trails. "Ego Dirt" we call it, because just about anyone can pilot a bike around corners like Brian Lopes in these conditions.
The racing and festival season is heating up too; Sea Otter just finished, The Fruita Fat Tire Festival is this week, followed by Ales and Trails the next weekend and so on.
One Mid-Summer event that gets us particularly excited is the Downieville Classic. It's in the tiny mountain town of Downieville, not too far from California's Lake Tahoe, and one of the best events of the year. No cell phones work up there, no internet, just a few days of bike riding, camping and swimming in warm rivers. In other words, good clean fun.
Q: Why do we like Downieville?
A: Because the riding is exceptional
Q: Why is the riding exceptional?
A: Because of the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship
About the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship
This small dedicated group of rapscallions and rabble-rousers have been tirelessly building trails up in Downieville for the last few years: Winter, Summer Spring and Fall. Due in great part to their efforts, Downieville and environs has become one of the premier mountain bike destinations in the US. When the good people at Yuba Expeditions asked us if we wanted to sponsor the Downieville Classic this year, we didn't hesitate for a second. And the good folks at Yuba let us specify that 100% of the money we put toward "The Classic" will go to the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS).
Enter the raffle to win an Ibis Mojo, help build a trail
We're finally getting to the heart of this information. We are going to raffle off a brand spankin' new Mojo worth well north of $5,000.00.
We've enlisted the help of our rider Brian Lopes. Brian likes Downieville just like we do, and we all decided we wanted to give a little something back. So we asked Brian to spec out a bike like he'd be riding up in Downieville. He did, and we asked his other sponsors to help us out with parts. They did.
Now it's your turn, and FIVE BUCKS IS ALL IT TAKES TO BUY A RAFFLE TICKET but we think you'll want to give a little more. The more you buy, the more trails you help build and the greater the chance you have of winning.
We will ship anywhere, so if you're in another country, go ahead and enter. Your size and color choice is also part of the deal.
For you Gearheads, here is the parts listing.
The frame is a Mojo Carbon, and it's available in all four sizes.
The winner gets to choose their color, as long as it's one of our 5 standard choices
Marzocchi 55 RC3 Fork with 160mm travel and 20mm thru axle (Thank you Marzocchi!)
Marzocchi ROCO TST Coil rear shock (Thank you again Marzocchi!)
Full Shimano XTR drivetrain (Thank you Shimano!)
Hayes Stroker Gram Brakes w/ 7" rotors front & rear (Thank you Hayes!)
Easton Havoc Stem, Havoc wheels, MonkeyLite XC Carbon Bars (Thank you Easton!)
Kenda Tires (Thank you Kenda!)
KS Adjustable Seatpost (Thank you KS!)

Spring has (finally) Sprung!
The weather is taking a turn for the better and there are lots of great rides on the horizon!
The Lewisville Yadkin River Metric Century will take place this year on Saturday, May 9.
It is that time of year again: time to get in shape! With this end in mind, Sunday, May 17 members of the Mock Orange crew will be hosting a fabulous road ride to the upper parking area in Hanging Rock State Park and back. We will depart from the shop at 10 am. The total distance on this ride is in the 70 mile range, so please come prepared for a good long day in the saddle. The shop will provide refreshments at the park, and then we will head on in. This ride will be great training for the 3 Mountain Madness ride taking place later in the month, or any other challenging ride that might be on your calendar. We are already looking forward to this Hanging Rock ride on May 17 so be sure to come on out!
Also, taking place on the same day as the 3 Mountain Madness (May 30) is a ride with a bit of a different feel, Gears and Cheers! Leaving from the Grove Winery in Guilford County, this promises to be a great ride. There is even a PRE-ride party on the Friday night prior! It definitely sounds like a good time will be had by all at the Gears and Cheers ride!
Thanks and we'll see you soon!

Dan Allen
Check out Dan Allen! He was out in the far western part of the state at Tsali for the third installment of the Southern Classic Mountain Bike series. Way to fly the colors Dan! The series continues on April 19th in Columbia, SC.
There was a lot happening this past weekend. If you were road racing in Rockhill or 6 Hour mountain bike racing at Warrior Creek, and you (like Dan) were rockin' your MOB kit, then send us your photos, and we'll make you famous!

The Freshest!
Here it is, the newest of the new, hot off the presses from Ibis, the Tranny. This bike is truly a one of a kind design. You single-speeders out there will really appreciate this... The rear triangle moves on a sliding joint behind the bb to adjust the chain tension. No horizontal drop outs, so no problems with disc brakes. No eccentric hub or bottom bracket, so no extra weight! Plus the frame is 100% sweet riding carbon! This particular ride belongs to Kyle Shatterly. He's got it built up with White Industries hubs and cranks, Stan's wheels and a Fox Terralogic fork. He's just waiting for a gap in the rain to get his slick new machine onto the trail!
(For those that like gears, this bike is perfectly happy built up with a standard front triple and rear cassette.)

The shoe has all the features of the R220 in terms of its heat/vacuum mold to the foot capability and carbon fiber sole, but with a three velcro strap fastening system in place instead of the ratchet/buckle system of the R220. The shoe is priced at $180 including the custom molding process, which is $100 less expensive than the R220. Additionally, right now Continental tires are 10% off the normal retail price with the purchase of a pair of R160 cycling shoes.
The Mock Orange Saturday morning road ride will leave the store at 10 am this Saturday. This week the ride will tackle the Williams Road loop out in the Lewisville area, which is about a 35 mile round trip from the shop. We are already looking forward to the weekend!
The 2009 racing season is underway! You can keep up with the Mock Orange Bikes racing action at http://www.blogger.com/www.mockorangeracing.com.
Thanks and we'll see you soon!

Shimano moldable shoe special!
Hello Friends,
We have recently been alerted by Shimano that in their warehouse there is a surplus of a fully heat moldable road cycling shoe called the R160. This is a shoe that was originally intended for European distribution only, but is now available in most sizes in the US via Shimano shoe dealers (such as the M.O.B) for a limited time. We will be bringing select sizes in for stock and will be offering this fully moldable shoe for a price of $180, including the custom heat molding process. That is a savings of $100 when compared to what has up to this point been the most affordable heat moldable Shimano shoe on the US market. We will be stocking these shoes, but for a limited time because they will not be around for long! If you are in need of some road shoes this could be a great opportunity.
Thanks and we'll see you soon!

Demo Saddle Program
Shopping for and purchasing a saddle is one the most difficult tasks cyclists face today. How do you know which seat is going to be the right fit for you? Well, the best way to figure this out is to try a couple of different models to see which ones work and which do not. This is where the Mock Orange Demo Saddle Program comes in to play. Come by, pick up one of our many demo saddles, stick it on your bike and give it a try. If it doesn't work, try another one until you find the perfect match. The program worked for Townes Middleton here, and it can work for you.
Thanks!

Springtme is coming! (sometime)
Hello Friends,
Well it looks like after what seems like too many cold days in a row there is actually some nicer weather headed our way this week. Also, the days are getting noticeably longer and the road bike is begining to beckon a little bit. These are all signs of what could only be one thing...Springtime must be on the way!
Thanks!

Two more editions of the "Unhappy Hour"
Hello Friends,
There are two more Monday night trainer sessions left for the season; this coming Monday, February 15 and the following Monday the 22nd. If you have not been able to make it out for one of these you have been missing some stellar indoor training! Do not fret though, because once again there are two more opportunities to experience the Monday night "Turbo" workouts at Mock Orange. Just bring your bike, an indoor trainer or a set of rollers, a towel, and some water! The "ride" begins at 6:15 pm on Monday evening.
Thanks!

Kona Ute
Check out the Kona Ute. This thing is awesome! With this kind of carrying capacity, you don't even need a car. Kona calls this model "Our super extended, carry-all, git'r done hauler." That pretty much says it all! The 29" wheels, Shimano componentry, and super sturdy frame make this bike a utilitarian dream. If you are considering a change to a "greener" way of living or have been commuting by bike for years, this bike could be of great interest. You can view the Ute in person (and test it out) at Mock Orange Bikes.
Thanks!

Tune Up Special
Hello Friends,
Happy New Year!
It was nice to see so many familiar faces at race 2 of the NC Winter Cyclocross Series held at SECCA last weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out to participate or spectate. You can view some pics from the event here. You can find more information about North Carolina 'Cross at www.nccyclocross.com.
The Mock Orange Service Department has a very special announcement this week: beginning Saturday, January 10 and ending Tuesday, February 10, standard bicycle tune-ups will be offered at half of the normal price of $55. That is correct ladies and gentleman; tune-ups for $27.50 from the 10th to the 10th! Bikes that come in after Tuesday, February 10 will be back up to the normal $55 rate. Take advantage of this special pricing and get that springtime tune-up a little early this year! A standard tune-up includes adjusting the front and rear derailleurs, adjusting the brakes, truing the wheels, tightening fittings, and lubricating the drive train.
The Mock Orange Saturday morning road ride leaves the shop at 10 am each Saturday for three hours of winter training. There is both an "A" and "B" group for this ride, so come on out on Saturday for some nice fresh air! Also, the Monday night "Unhappy Hour" is rolling along. Each Monday evening at 6pm through February we will continue the indoor trainer sessions. Throw your bike, your trainer, and some water in the car and come on down! And, by popular demand, the Wednesday night Salem Lake CX ride will re-emerge from its holiday hiatus this evening. Come join us for a lap or two around the lake. We shall depart at 6:15 from the shop, weather permitting of course.
Thanks and we'll see you soon!
